The
method that I have been using has been to jump from the top of the bridge to
the pelican, using the bridge structures to protect me from enemy fire, and
as jumping points...

isn't the best example of jumping from the bottom, but it will give you an

Overkill just submitted a movie last night (it'll be in the Tricks section
just as soon as I can put it there ;) ) showing a 'double-jump' - if you hit
your 'crouch' key at the apex of a jump, you get a tiny extra boost. Maybe
